Any surgery comes with some degree of risk. However, when you compare liposuction to other forms of cosmetic surgery, liposuction is possibly the safest. This is because liposuction is comparatively less invasive than other methods of cosmetic surgery and the liposuction side effects are minimal.

What are the liposuction side effects?

Most of the liposuction side effects are so minor that, within a week of surgery, most patients are able to go back to work and resume their day-to-day activities. Common side effects of liposuction include:

– temporary swelling
– bruising
– soreness
– numbness

Other liposuction side effects include minor pain, burning, swelling, bruising and draining of the wound.

There are a number of risks in liposuction. However, the danger during the procedure is much less than the risks that can occur in post-operative care with special reference to infection, pain, and scarring.

Whilst not being classified as liposuction side effects, the following risks should be considered.

1. Shock – When too much fat extraction is attempted, the body sometimes reacts by going into shock. This can be extremely dangerous particularly when the patient in under general anesthesia although the majority of liposuction surgery is carried out under local anesthetic.
2. Scarring – Inappropriate or poor surgery can leave unsightly scars. It is extremely important to choose an experienced and board certified plastic surgeon for your liposuction procedure.
3. Lidocaine allergy – To date the exact safe level of lidocaine use has not been fully determined. There have been instances where large amounts of lidocaine have induced a violent allergic reaction.
4. Blood clotting – This can happens when the surgery is performed over a long period of time causing the blood to pool in certain areas of the body.
5. Hemodilution – This is an extremely uncommon liposuction side effect that can occur when the surgeon injects too much anesthetic into the fat layer. Experience and expertise of the surgeon is the best prevention against this liposuction side effect.
