How Does Laser Liposuction Work?

Laser liposuction or laser-assisted liposuction is a European technology designed to reduce the pain, swelling, and bruising associated with conventional liposuction methods.

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is the removal of unwanted bumps and lumps caused by excess fat in many areas of the body using suction tubes that are inserted into the body through small incisions. A vacuum pump is then attached to the tubes to remove the fat deposits.

How Liposuction Works

The way that laser liposuction works is that low-level laser energy waves are focused on the part of the body that need treatment. The waves penetrate the skin and weaken the membrane of the fat cells and the fat stored in these cell literally oozes out of the cells.

A small incision is then made and a tiny surgical instrument called a cannula is inserted to suck the fat from the area in a manner similar to conventional liposuction but without a major incision.

The low-level energy laser is then reset for optimal pain management relief. For the final procedure of laser liposuction the laser is then reset again for anti-inflammatory and anti-swelling which will dramatically reduce the post-operative discomfort. The following day the patient may return for a follow-up session of pain management.

Where can it be used?

The areas where laser liposuction are most commonly used on women are the abdomen, hips, thighs and knees. On men it is common on the abdomen, love handles, enlarged breasts, arms, and neck. Laser liposuction can also be used to remove the sweat glands from armpit area to reduce perspiration without any danger of interfering with the body’s process of cooling itself.

Advantage of laser liposuction

The advantages of laser liposuction become clear when compared to the conventional tumescent and ultrasonic-assisted liposuction. These two methods usually require a longer recovery period compared to the short recovery time of laser liposuction and, as mentioned previously, laser liposuction greatly reduces the swelling and bruising.

Another advantage of laser-assisted liposuction is that most patients do not require any type of postoperative prescribed pain medication. The time involved in laser liposuction is no longer than a conventional procedure and is usually done under local anesthetic.

Most patients having laser liposuction can usually return to normal activities within a matter of days.
