Liposuction Recovery Swelling

Liposuction has become an extremely popular cosmetic surgery procedure, which involves the removal of excess fat tissue from the body. This procedure can be carried out successfully on the upper arms, cheeks, neck, buttocks, thighs, abdomen, chest, ankles, calves and chin. It is considered a safe cosmetic procedure; nonetheless there can be complications in rare cases.

Liposuction Recovery Period

The liposuction recovery period is usually short, and without complications. Because general anesthesia is not used in tumescent liposuction the recovery period begins as soon as the operation is complete and many patients can return to work within a week or ten days after the surgery.

Liposuction Recovery Swelling

The liposuction patient should expect some discomfort in the days following the procedure. It is common to experience pain, temporary numbness and swelling for the first few weeks. Pain medication will usually relieve the discomfort and compression garments will be worn to minimize the liposuction recovery swelling. The compression garments are usually worn for several days and play an important part in the recovery process.

Bruising

Patients should expect some bruising following liposuction and this usually lasts from a couple of days up to two weeks. As the liposuction recovery swelling reduces, so does the post-operative bruising.

Drainage from Liposuction Incisions

Liposuction incisions are rarely sutured and will drain for several days after the procedure. The liposuction recovery swelling reduces more rapidly when the incisions are left to drain the excess fluid rather than having the body absorb it and then remove it.
